New Schools for 2008

Dec 8, 2007

Two new schools are joining the programme next year. Heather will be starting a Year 5 wind instrument group at Puhinui School. These children were introduced to the instruments by the Papatoetoe West band early in December, so they were able to make their choices before the holidays.

The Trust is extending its programme at Papatoetoe East School, where a team of three teachers, led by Rachel Snelling, will be starting a string group with Year 5 children. Rachel intends to structure the programme in order to achieve a balanced string orchestra. This will probably include 14 violins, 4 violas, 5 cellos and a double bass. The teachers – Rachel, her brother David, and Lyn Insley – will teach the children in groups of 4-5, with time each week to come together as a string orchestra.

Both these new schools are neighbours of Pap. West School, so perhaps an occasional FULL orchestral concert will be possible in the future!

The Principals of the schools, Kevin Hornby of Puhinui, and Graeme Gilbert of PEP, have conveyed their delight and enthusiasm at being involved in new music initiatives for their pupils.
