Wind Groups at the King's Band Festival

Wind Groups at the King's Band Festival

In September 49 members of Heather’s wind groups attended the King’s Band Festival. Once again it was a successful and exciting time for all involved. The children spent 2 days playing along with over 200 others – a mindblowing experience! Some of Trevor’s comments: “To see that enthusiasm and genuine appreciation on the children’s faces encapsulated what... > Read more

Auckland Youth Orchestra Concert

Auckland Youth Orchestra Concert

In April the string groups attended an AYO concert in the Auckland Town Hall, and 20 Year 6 children played in the foyer before the concert for 20 minutes. People stopped and listened on their way in to the AYO concert and clapped at the end of pieces. The children were excited to be at the Town Hall, but they would have loved to be playing in the Town Hall, and that is what the team will... > Read more

Papatoetoe East School

Rachel and David Snelling and Lyn Insley are well into a year of activity with their two string groups. They are developing their own music tutor book for Year 5 pupils, as most books cater for older children. The Year 6 orchestra performed for ERO recently. They played well and ERO was impressed that children of all ability were included, not just clever/talented ones. They were surprised... > Read more

Papatoetoe West and Puhinui Schools

Heather now has to stretch herself between two schools and 4 bands, but she attacks these timetabling gymnastics with her usual enthusiasm. Embouchure and Band Protocol were the main focus for the Beginner bands in the first term, but despite the demise of many reeds, the students have mastered a good number of songs already. Heather is very grateful for the voluntary assistance of Sean... > Read more

NZ String Quartet visit PEP

In Term 1 the NZSQ visited the PEP orchestras and reported that "50+ rapt and attentive young budding musicians" listened to a mixed programme of short excerpts of Haydn, Stravinsky, Janacek, etc, and everyone had a wonderful time. The children were keen to display their expertise for the quartet as well. > Read more

Thank You!

The Board of the Tironui Music Trust would particularly like to thank those people who have so kindly given donations during the year. These extra funds mean that we are able to offer the children additional activities that they would otherwise be unable to afford. These include visits to hear professional orchestras (APO this year, and Buskaid in 2007), as well as visits to other schools... > Read more

Heather now runs a beginner band at Puhinui School as well as at Pap. West. Both have had a good year and are producing more controlled and consistent sounds. Public performance is an important part of their activities, and both bands have performed at school events including concerts, assemblies and graduations. Rachel, David and Lyn’s first year string orchestra at Papatoetoe East... > Read more

Second Year Band update 08

In September Heather’s group joined with 200 other primary school children at the Kings Band Festival. She reported that her students did remarkably well as most of the other children had been learning for over 2 ½ years. She pushed them along believing they could rise to the challenge, which they did. She says, “It was a terrific day and our band combined with Kohimarama Band... > Read more

A Parent says...

It is a great privilege for Rahsaan to be part of the band, and I am very appreciative for him to be given the opportunity to learn and play an instrument. I feel that he will benefit greatly, not only in the two years of tutoring he will get at Pap. West, but hopefully also in the schools he progresses to…. With such terrible things being publicised in the media at the moment, and with... > Read more

KBB Music

KBB Music

Since TMT began this programme in 2006, Alan Kemp of KBB Music has very generously loaned all the instruments to the groups. The average cost of this is about $100 per instrument, and Alan has indicated that he is willing to continue this contribution in 2009. With 6 groups under way next year, this is a significant donation to the Trust. Once again we recognise his outstanding generosity,... > Read more

Combined Bands Concert 2008

The highlight for children and teachers this semester was of course the concert on 20th September, where all four Tironui Trust groups played for a large audience that included the Prime Minister Helen Clark, several other politicians, educators, principals, and a hall full of proud whanau and friends. The event began with a powhiri, and the Prime Minister spoke – and also joined in on... > Read more

APO Kiwi Capers Concert 2008

In October TMT sponsored a trip for all the groups to attend this concert. The teachers report that all the children were totally captivated by the experience. Heather said, “I know that most of the children at the concert were not musicians and didn’t quite appreciate the event as much as ours did. Ours were sitting there with bug eyes and open mouths during the... > Read more

Papatoetoe West

The year started with “tonnes of enthusiasm and duck farts as well as goose honks”! Heather’s Beginner Band is a very keen group - they know what a legacy they have to follow. This group has an extra player because one candidate refused to accept no for an answer, so was rewarded for her tenacity! The band percussionist is a girl who is showing aptitude, and the band is... > Read more

Papatoetoe East Primary School

Rachel and David Snelling and Lyn Insley have made an enthusiastic start with a string orchestra for 25 Year 5 children. Rachel reports that there is a wide range of ability and aptitude amongst them, but also a strong sense of excitement and eagerness. When the children chose their preferred instruments at the beginning of the year, they ended up with a balanced orchestra, with 14 violins, 4... > Read more

First Graduates

The original band that started with Heather in 2006 has now dispersed to different schools, but Heather has heard from several of them. Malia-Ane is continuing to play saxophone at her school, and her mum keeps saying thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. Kataraina is now learning the piano.
