In December the children from our two bands were lucky enough to be able to see a performance by the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble. What an inspiration that was! These young people from impoverished backgrounds have overcome great odds to become polished and dynamic musicians. In the words of Helen Clark – “The commitment of these players and their supporters has taken them from small beginnings to critical acclaim on the international stage.” Their concerts, a combination of classical compositions and African music and dance, are regularly given standing ovations – and Auckland was no exception.
The children had an extra thrill when the Buskaid members came and talked to them after the concert. Maybe some of our band members will follow in their footsteps one day!
