Tironui Music Trust is thrilled to announce the creation of three new Hugo Charitable Trust Scholarships to support young musicians from South Auckland achieve their ambitions through music.

The Tironui Music Trust is dedicated to empowering young New Zealanders through the transformative power of music. We provide fully funded instrumental music programmes to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity, fostering a lifelong love of music, diligence and confidence. Started by our founders Peter and Pam Hubscher, the Tironui programme has run for 18 years and supports students in Papatoetoe & Mt Wellington, South Auckland. It provides fully-funded opportunities for young New Zealanders to learn a string or concert band instrument, and the outcomes that ensemble music-making brings. The Trust offers comprehensive year long programmes, in-school and after-school ensemble and scholarship opportunities, and holiday programmes for our ākonga. We partner with 7 primary schools, and continue to support students at Intermediate and High School.

We are thrilled by the generous donation of $90,000 from the Hugo Charitable Trust to support of three of our young musicians, and the opportunities that this will provide as they continue on their musical journey all the way to the end of Year 13. By identifying and nurturing talent early, we aim to help our scholars reach their full potential, and the Hugo Charitable Trust support will inspire increased ambition and love of music for these tamariki and their whānau.

The three scholarship recipients, who are all finishing Year 6 and heading into Year 7 are:

-       Patchara Khamphawa (Violin) – Bailey Road School

-       Samaira Ahmed (Violin) – Papatoetoe Central School

-       Moriyyah Talamaivao-Tagaloamatua (Viola) – Papatoetoe East School

The scholarships will provide individual tuition with a Tironui Music Trust tutor, access to higher level instruments, funding of external music exams, performance opportunities, mentoring opportunities with players from Auckland Philharmonia, and other chances to nurture our talented young musicians as they take their next steps on their musical journey. Each scholarship is valued at $30,000 over the term of their schooling, and by identifying and supporting talented students early, we aim to help them reach their full potential.

The three recipients have already achieved success in external Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations, with Patchara and Samaira both reaching Grade 4 violin, and Moriyyah Grade 3 Viola. These are tremendous achievements for students still in Primary School, and equivalent to the expected levels in NCEA Level 1 – Year 11 music.

Tironui Music Trust is passionate about supporting musical progress and pathways within Tāmaki Makaurau, which can often be challenging to navigate for our students and whānau. Our enormous thanks goes to the Hugo Charitable Trust for recognising the role that music education and learning an instrument can play in building both musical and life skills for young people in New Zealand. With this amazing opportunity, the future is bright for our talented tamariki. ⭐️
