The Tironui Music Trust is inviting dedicated individuals to join its board of trustees. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a vibrant organisation focused on nurturing young musicians and developing musical pathways. If you have a passion for music, a broad range of skills, and a desire to make a meaningful impact, becoming a trustee could be the perfect way to get involved.

What the Tironui Music Trust Does
Tironui Music Trust is a not-for-profit charitable Trust that was started in 2007 and has gone from strength to strength since then.
It is dedicated to empowering young New Zealanders through the transformative power of music. We provide fully funded instrumental music programmes in school (including in school holidays) to primary, intermediate and secondary age students, fostering diligence, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.
It is an inclusive programme currently for students in 9 partner schools in Mt Wellington and Papatoetoe, South Auckland, and in 2026 will impact over 600 participants, providing musicianship, string, band and scholarship tuition for those who may not have otherwise had the opportunity. Our program begins with a strong foundation in musicianship for Year 3 and 4 students, and through engaging activities, we develop essential musical skills that prepare students for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.
The Trust is largely privately funded through the vision and generosity of our founders, Peter and Pam Hubscher.
Why Become a Trustee
Trustees play a crucial role in shaping the trust’s direction, ensuring it stays true to its mission while adapting to new challenges and opportunities. The board oversees financial decisions, strategic development, and community engagement strategies.
The Trust Board of (currently) six members meets approximately four times per year. Its primary function is to support our General manager Rod Skipp, and to ensure that growth and development strategies are aligned to the Trust Deed and resources available.
Joining the Tironui Music Trust board offers a chance to:
Influence the future of music in the South Auckland community
Support emerging young musicians and help develop pathways for them to thrive
Gain experience in governance and nonprofit management
Connect with like-minded individuals passionate about music education and seeing young New Zealanders reach their potential through a full-funded music programme
Board members derive enormous satisfaction from seeing love of music and instrumental skill development awaken in students who may not otherwise have had this opportunity.
What Trustees Are Expected to Do
Responsibilities include:
Attending board meetings and participating actively
Reviewing financial reports and budgets
Helping with fundraising and outreach efforts
Providing strategic advice and oversight
Representing the trust at musical and community events
At the next stage of its growth, the board is looking to add knowledge of the South Auckland community in which we operate, and knowledge of the challenges and opportunities as the Papatoetoe/ Mt Wellington area continues to grow and develop.
The Board is also looking to add knowledge and contacts in the area of fundraising and PR.
Who Should Apply
We are looking for up to two additional board members who will bring some of the following attributes, knowledge and skills - we recognise that not every applicant is likely to have all of these!
You will be passionate about the potential of young people, the joy and benefits they can derive from making music together, and the role that music education can play in helping them develop skills that will serve them in all areas of life.
You will be well connected into and/or have experience of Auckland’s school system and be able to bring your knowledge and experience to the board role to help us navigate challenges as they arise.
You will have experience and/or knowledge of sourcing and stewarding donors/funders who are open to the vision of the Trust
Your enthusiasm for the power and benefits of music to Tamariki will be backed by knowledge of how to drive expanded awareness of what we do
Some governance and/or leadership experience is an advantage
Trustees are volunteers (unpaid), and the board meets approximately four times a year in Auckland.
